– Hybris says you can experiment with a different section of the sample used, instead of using the exact same sound for all three layers.Ġ4:10 – trying different modes of the Bitwig sampler. – Achieved with pitch and the sampler’s ADSR envelope.Ġ3:20 – decides the second layer will be the noisy layer. – Duplicates this layer two more times inside the Instrument Layer, will work on crafting each of these using the same source sound. – Again, slices off-phase, just a little bit of pop at the beginning of the sound. – You can use Instrument Layers in many ways, thinking in terms of pads, basses, and FX. – This part has a similar set-up approach with the drum machine, however the snare is made of three layers, and uses an Instrument Layer, which lets you trigger three samplers with one key press. – Explains how in Bitwig, you can assign effects per drum pad/cell, or to the entire output of the drum machine. – States this is a quick demonstration, normally he would spend more time on creating the sound. – In Bitwig 2, you add an ADSR modulator to a modulator slot, then assign it to the sampler’s pitch. – Records two bars for a kick pattern, then goes further in to shaping the sound.Ġ6:15 – adjusting envelope settings on the sampler, then adjusting pitch, and adjusting the sample region. – Makes sure the start point is off-phase, not on a zero crossing, in order to get a pop/click to create a transient. 50% experimenting.Ġ4:20 – explains qualities he’s looking for to create a kick with. – States that for him, sound design is 50% planning vs. – Hybris likes this sample because of the range of frequencies in it.Ġ2:10 – looking at Bitwig’s Drum Machine device.Ġ3:00 – using the Clip mode, which is similar to Ableton’s Session View.Ġ3:30 – starting with creating drums, specifically kicks for this part. – Sample Genie has uploaded this sample here: – Hybris’s aim is to demonstrate interesting ways to use a single sample for sound design.Ġ1:15 – single source sample used is QZB_FX_FADEANDGATE.

– This video features Bitwig v2.4, which is the version with the updated sampler. – References his track “Click Bait” as the reference point for these videos using a single source sample to write a track. – Hybris recently started using Bitwig 2, after several years as a Cubase user. Split in to five parts, and covering the main elements to build off of. Using the Shape dropdown menu, you select Tilt Shelf, which tilts the spectrum around the chosen frequency. The second Hybris tutorial for season 6, and the first Sample Genie video featuring Bitwig. One of the more unique functions in the Pro Q2 is the Tilt EQ option, which you enable simply by creating an EQ band and using the floating band controls display. The point is, you not only hear the cuts, you actually see them. You could also choose to enable a filter and cut that bottom out, as well as notch down a few frequencies that are booming. Then, if you want to quickly cut that down and clean up the ‘mud’, simply add a new EQ band by clicking on the yellow overall curve and drag that frequency down until you get that bass information under control. It also helps to see how wide that overextended bass may be (across multiple frequencies/notes or just a few). If you hear that there’s too much bass or low mid information on your guitar part for example, but are not totally sure, the screen won't lie. There is quite a bit of value in not only hearing your frequencies, but seeing them on the screen in real time.

Not to mention how good it all looks while you do it! You can also EQ Mid/Side, view your frequencies on a piano roll, enable auto gain, zoom horizontally, freeze your frequencies, solo them and more. You can tweak with up to 24 EQ bands and a useful variety of filter types (Bell, Notch, High/Low Shelf, High/Low Cut, Band Pass, Tilt Shelf).
